ARB 101 -- Elementary Arabic I  (5 units)
Description:  Conversation and readings in modern standard Arabic.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).

ARB 102 -- Elementary Arabic II  (5 units)
Description:  Conversation and readings in modern standard Arabic.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 101.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).

ARB 399 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 401 -- Intermediate Arabic I  (5 units)
Description:  Intermediate conversation and readings in modern standard Arabic.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 102.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 402 -- Intermediate Arabic II  (5 units)
Description:  Intermediate conversation and readings in modern standard Arabic.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 401.
Special exam:  course may be taken by special exam for credit (not for grade).

ARB 403 -- Advanced Arabic I  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of 402 with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 402.
May be convened with:  ARB 503.

ARB 404 -- Advanced Arabic II  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of 403 with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 403.

ARB 424A -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 101.

ARB 424B -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension.

ARB 425A -- Conversational Gulf Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 101.

ARB 425B -- Conversational Gulf Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension.
Prerequisite(s):  ARB 101.

ARB 426 -- Introduction to Arabic Linguistics  (3 units)
Description:  History and structure of the Arabic language in its various forms.
Prerequisite(s):  LING 201.
Identical to:  LING 426.
May be convened with:  ARB 526.
Usually offered:  Spring.

ARB 439A -- Egyptian Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the Cairene dialect. Phonology, common greetings, basic vocabulary and grammar.
Prerequisite(s):  one year of standard Arabic.
May be convened with:  ARB 539A.

ARB 439B -- Egyptian Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the Cairene dialect. Phonology, common greetings, basic vocabulary and grammar.
Prerequisite(s):  one year of standard Arabic.

ARB 448 -- Arabic Literature in English  (3 units)
Description:  Historical survey of Arabic literature of the Middle East and Mediterranean world, with readings in English translations.
May be convened with:  ARB 548.

ARB 495A -- Readings in Modern Arabic Prose  (3 units)
Description:  The exchange of scholarly information and/or secondary research, usually in a small group setting. Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons. Research projects may or may not be required of course registrants.
Prerequisite(s):  two years of Arabic.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
May be convened with:  ARB 595A.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 495B -- Readings in Classic Arabic Prose  (3 units)
Description:  The exchange of scholarly information and/or secondary research, usually in a small group setting. Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons. Research projects may or may not be required of course registrants.
Prerequisite(s):  two years of Arabic.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
May be convened with:  ARB 595B.

ARB 495C -- Readings in Classical Arabic Poetry  (3 units)
Description:  The exchange of scholarly information and/or secondary research, usually in a small group setting. Instruction often includes lectures by several different persons. Research projects may or may not be required of course registrants.
Prerequisite(s):  three years of Arabic for non-native speakers of Arabic.
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
May be convened with:  ARB 595C.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 498 -- Senior Capstone  (1-3 units)
Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 499 -- Independent Study  (1-6 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 499H -- Honors Independent Study  (1-6 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 503 -- Advanced Arabic I  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of 402 with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression. Graduate-level requirements include more assignments in Vol. III of the text and additional outside readings.
May be convened with:  ARB 403.

ARB 504 -- Advanced Arabic II  (3 units)
Description:  Continuation of 403 with emphasis on oral and written comprehension and expression. Graduate-level requirements include more assignments in Vol. III of the text and additional outside readings.
May be convened with:  ARB 404.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 524A -- Conversational Levantine Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Extensive oral drill with emphasis on the acquisition of facility in normal conversation and comprehension. Graduate-level requirements include the ability to speak with sufficient structural vocabulary to participate in most formal and informal conversations, requiring a mastery of at least 120 additional vocabulary items.

Graduate-level requirements include the ability to speak with sufficient structural vocabulary to participate in most formal and informal conversations, requiring a mastery of at least 120 additional vocabulary items.

ARB 526 -- Introduction to Arabic Linguistics  (3 units)
Description:  History and structure of the Arabic language in its various forms. Graduate-level requirements include a research paper on any phonological, morphological, or syntactic structure of any variety of Arabic.
Identical to:  LING 526.
May be convened with:  ARB 426.

ARB 539A -- Egyptian Arabic  (3 units)
Description:  Introduction to the Cairene dialect. Phonology, common greetings, basic vocabulary and grammar. Graduate-level requirements include a picture description, summary of taped dialogues, and short reports on Egyptian movies.
May be convened with:  ARB 439A.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ARB 539B -- Egyptian Arabic  (3 units)

ARB 548 -- Arabic Literature in English  (3 units)

ARB 599 -- Independent Study  (1-3 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work. Graduate students doing independent work which cannot be classified as actual research will register for credit under course number 599, 699, or 799.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.
