Summer 2007 Course Descriptions

All courses below are approved to be taught in Summer 2007; however, some (or all) may not be offered.  The course numbers that are offered, in either Pre-Session, Summer I or Summer II, are linked to the Schedule of Classes. Classes with alternative External Link delivery modes (Web based, cable TV, correspondence, etc) are noted in the Schedule at the section level.  The complete list below is a good indicator of what may be offered over the next few years (contact department about offerings).  For explanations of course elements see the Key to Course Descriptions.

Anthropology (ANTV)  Department Info

ANTV 307 -- Ecological Anthropology  (3 units)
Description:  Cultural adaptation with emphasis on the systematic interaction of environment, technology, and social organization among hunter-gatherers, nomadic herders, and peasant farmers.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  ANTH307
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: ANTV 307 or ANTH 307
Prerequisite(s):  satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA) or the former upper-division writing proficiency requirement (UDWPE).
Approved as:  General Education Tier Two - Individuals and Societies.
Approved as:  General Education Diversity Emphasis.
Usually offered:  Fall.

ANTV 393 -- Internship  (1-4 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

ANTV 393E -- Congressional Staff Internship  (1-12 units)
Description:  Specialized work on an individual basis, consisting of training and practice in actual service in a technical, business, or governmental establishment.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
Equivalent to:  POL 393E
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: ANTV 393E or POL 393E
Prerequisite(s):  open to majors only.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Identical to:  POLV 393E; POLV is home department.
Usually offered:  Summer.

ANTV 395B -- Special Topics in Cultural Anthropology  (3 units)
Description:  The course as taught in any one semester depends on student need and interest, and the research/teaching interests of the participating faculty member.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.
Equivalent to:  ANTH395B
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: ANTV 395B or ANTH 395B
May be repeated:  for credit 1 time (maximum 2 enrollments).
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring.

ANTV 399 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.
Grading:  Alternative grades are awarded for this course: S P C D E.
May be repeated:  an unlimited number of times, consult your department for details and possible restrictions.
Usually offered:  Fall, Spring, Summer.

ANTV 423 -- Anthropology of Rural Mexico  (3 units)
Description:  Historical and cultural background, and contemporary economic, political and social organization of indigenous and non-indigenous groups in rural Mexico. Primarily concerned with the people of the countryside, and the Mexican revolution.
Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.
Equivalent to:  ANTH423
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: ANTV 423 or ANTH 423
Prerequisite(s):  Previous coursework in Latin American Studies preferred.
Identical to:  AISV 423, LASV 423.

ANTV 453A -- Mesoamerican Archaeology  (3 units)
Description:  Development of culture in Mexico and Central America from the origins of agriculture through the Spanish Conquest. Course focuses on Maya culture.  This is a Writing Emphasis Course.

Equivalent to:  ANTH453A
Mutually Exclusive: Credit allowed for only one of these courses: ANTV 453A or ANTH 453A

Description:  A culminating experience for majors involving a substantive project that demonstrates a synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies. Senior standing required.
Grading:  Regular or alternative grades can be awarded for this course: A B C D E or S P C D E.

ANTV 499 -- Independent Study  (1-5 units)
Description:  Qualified students working on an individual basis with professors who have agreed to supervise such work.

ANTV 599 -- Independent Study  (1-6 units)
